About Woodmere (ZIP Code 11598)

Woodmere is a hamlet in Nassau County on the south shore of Long Island, New York. It’s population was 17,121 at the 2010 census. Woodmere is the largest populated and has the largest area of the Long Island communities known as the Five Towns, which are usually said to comprise the villages of Lawrence and Cedarhurst, the hamlets of Woodmere and Inwood, and “The Hewletts”, which consist of the villages of Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor and Hewlett Neck and the hamlet of Hewlett, along with Woodsburgh. The “towns” most commonly included as constituents of the Five Towns are all within the Town of Hempstead and are represented by Councilman Bruce Blakeman.

Woodmere was originally known as Brower’s Point. In 1869, Samuel Wood purchased land and named it Woodsburgh. Woodmere also derived from his name. Woodmere has both large custom homes and smaller split levels. Many of the homes have scenic water views of Lee Lake, which is a NY State water preserve.

Woodmere Neighborhoods

• Woodsburgh. The incorporated village of Woodsburgh was established in 1912. It stretches from Broadway to the bay.  The Village has a total area of 0.4 square miles and a population of 778 at the time of the 2010 census. Woodsburgh consists mainly of large homes and estates.
• North Woodmere. Actually a hamlet section of South Valley Stream. It is directly north of Woodmere, but separated by Mott’s Creek. Access to Woodmere is by Branch Boulevard and a footbridge over the creek. Hungry Harbor Road is the main east-west route through North Woodmere, connecting with Branch Boulevard (to Cedarhurst) and Brookfield-Rosedale Road (to Valley Stream). Hungry Harbor Road is thought to be named for the marsh filled harbor that was difficult to farm. The community is home to North Woodmere Park, a Nassau County Park. North Woodmere has a very large Jewish population and is home to several synagogues, including Young Israel of North Woodmere, Congregation Ohr Torah, Beis Haknesses of North Woodmere and Temple Hillel.
• Old Woodmere. Roughly bordered by Johnson Place, Peninsula Boulevard, Woodmere Boulevard, Browers Point Bridge and Ocean Avenue and bisected by East Broadway. A quaint area of Woodmere where homes tend to be older than in other areas of Woodmere.
• Woodmere Park

Woodmere Schools

Woodmere features a wonderful public school system (which is also serviced by Lawrence, another neighborhood in the five towns). It also has a well known private school and is within reach of many Jewish schools for elementary and high school age students.

Woodmere Station and the posh boutiques, upscale eateries and small businesses that line Central Avenue, which was once referred to as Long Island’s Rodeo Drive. There are approximately 240 stores within the one quarter square mile area of Woodmere and numerous shops, groceries, Kosher meat and food.
